Dimitri Chrisos
Copa Jiu Jitsu Tournaments Founder
The first steps towards making the Copa series of Jiu Jitsu tournaments a reality were taken in 2016 in the form of in-house tournaments by Professor Dimitri Chrisos in his Academy in Chantilly, VA. The impetus for the tournaments was the need for a periodic, high-quality, local (in the Northern Virginia or DC Metro area), Jiu Jitsu tournament that was properly organized and run on time. Those in-house tournaments started to grow in popularity as different Academies were invited to participate.
As the tournaments grew in size and moved locations, there were several reiterations (such as Copa Chantilly and Copa Arlington), until they reached their present form in early 2018 when the first Copa Virginia Jiu Jitsu tournament was held, offering cash prizes for male and female divisions. With the support of the local Jiu Jitsu community (in the form of participants, staff members, spectators, etc.)
In April 2022, we held our first super-fight style event - Copa Elite - to fill another gap in the area. It was a big success and we are planning to have more in the future!
Copa Jiu Jitsu tournaments continue to offer a high-level Jiu Jitsu experience with events that run on time, have reasonable registrations fees, offer cash prizes, and many other features that have made them popular over time.
Thank you all for your support - See you at our next event!
Rules
Copa Jiu Jitsu tournaments use almost in their entirety the rule-set established by the International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation (IBJJF), which can be found here. It is the international standard of our sport. The only exception is that our No Gi Divisions are set by skill set (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced), instead of belt color. For more details, please read our "Information" section on each of our 'smoothcomp.com' registration tournament pages.
